I spent 17 years in the medical device industry in a variety of management positions before purchasing the Green Acres Kennel Shop in Bangor, ME in 1995. Today Green Acres is a Pet Care Services Association (PCSA) accredited facility offering boarding, daycare, grooming, training classes, behavioral consultations and the sale of food and supplies for dogs and cats. Green Acres does not sell animals.
I am a Certified Professional Dog Trainer (CPDT-KA), an IAABC Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC), a Therapy Dogs International and AKC CGC evaluator, and a Bach Foundation Registered Animal Practitioner (BFRAP).
I served on the Board of the Madison Audubon Society from 1989 through 1995, four years as its President; I have been on the Board of the Bangor Humane Society since 1996 and was its President for five years. I served on the APDT Board from 2002 through 2007, and was APDT President in 2007. I currently serve on the Maine state Animal Welfare Advisory Council (AWAC), representing licensed boarding kennels. I am also a member of the Bangor Breakfast Rotary Club, and a member and past President, of the Paul Bunyan Chapter of Business Networks International (BNI).
Continuing education is very important to me. I have attended 9 APDT conferences and over fifty other seminars and workshops. I have presented seminars in the USA, Canada, the Caribbean, and Japan. In 2005 I started “The Woof-Meow” show, a weekly radio program broadcast on WVOM-FM and WVQM-FM and available throughout most of Maine, I have also written articles for The APDT Chronicle of the Dog, DownEast Dog News and Green Acres own newsletter, web site and blog.
My wife Paula and I have been fortunate to share our lives with nine dogs, six of them rescues. From a 10lb Cairn Terrier to a 90lb Alaskan Malamute, they have each had their own unique personalities and have taught us their own special lessons. Our Cairn Terrier Gus was instrumental in leading us into the pet care services industry and the exploration of holistic and complementary health care and nutrition for our pets. We currently live with two dogs and three cats; Tikken (a 13 y/o Golden Retriever and retired therapy dog), Dulcie (a 13 y/o rescued Cairn Terrier), Batman (a 14 y/o rescued domestic short haired cat) and Thelma and Louise (9 y/o former barn cats that are now Green Acres feline retail associates).
