The Education Subject area Task Force role is to:

  1. Create the criteria for evaluating existing educational resources, develop a database and identify gaps in available resources.

Operational Alignment:
In alignment with the APDT's Strategic Plan, the Education Subject area Task Force will work to create the criteria for evaluating educational resources and create a database, under the guidance of the APDT staff, APDT Education Committee and APDT Board of Trustees.

Education Subject area Task Force Mission:
The mission of the Education Subject area Task Force is to develop a set of criteria for evaluating existing educational resources (books, dvds, seminars, training schools, etc.) and create a database of existing resources.

Education Committee Purpose (Role):

  1. To develop the criteria for reviewing educational resources. Criteria will be developed in conjunction with other domain task forces to create one general list and a specific list for each domain if needed.
  2. To develop a database of existing resources and where they fit into the curriculum.
  3. To identify gaps in existing resources based on our curriculum.
  4. To develop questions for their subject area for an online pre-assessment tool.

Education Committee Deliverables:

  1. The task force will create a document outlining the criteria for resource assessment.
  2. The task force will research existing resources and review based on the criteria to develop a database.
  3. The task force will create a list of gaps identified in existing resources.
  4. The task force will create questions for an online pre-assessment tool for their subject area.

Resources:
The task force will be provided with a limited budget for conference calls. The committee's assigned staff person is Katenna Jones, with the assistance of Mychelle Blake.

Authority/Limitations:

  1. Education task force members provide advice, support and analysis regarding the creation of criteria for evaluating educational resources.
  2. Education task force members may solicit information from outside resources, in coordination with the APDT staff, required to carry out their role on the task force.
  3. Members are not representatives of the APDT and cannot represent the APDT on a local, national or international level without prior written permission from the management and/or board of trustees.

Method of Committee/Task Force Member Selection/Nomination Term:
The Chair and APDT staff select members. Members are required to sign confidentiality, conflict of interest forms and receipt of the APDT Volunteer Manual. Term is for one (1) year with the option to be appointed for additional years as determined by the Chair and staff.

Accountability:
The Chair and task force are responsible to the associated staff contact, their education committee liaison, and the APDT board of trustees.

Job Description

Reports to: Education Committee Chair/Liaison and APDT Educational Programs Coordinator

Time Commitment
Minimum of 10-15 hours/month.

Required Experience, Knowledge & Skills:

  • Experience in the specific domain area for the Subject Task Force.
  • Proficient in use of the Internet and email with ability to reply quickly to emails on a daily basis.
  • Ability to use video chat systems such as Skype, Oovoo or Google+ without technical assistance.
  • Experience with using Microsoft software such as Word, Excel and Powerpoint.
  • APDT Professional, Full, Associate or Lifetime Member in good standing for at least one year.

Desirable Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

  • Experience developing and implementing a successful training programming for professional trainers.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Excellent organizational and planning skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with other trainers with diverse backgrounds, strongly held beliefs and differing opinions on training methods
  • Ability to meet deadlines and respond quickly on short notice
  • Knowledge of a wide variety of ways of working with dogs and their owners
  • General knowledge of the forums available to trainers for credentialing and education in dog training
  • Knowledge and experience in credentialing and education programs for fields other than dog training

Committee Goals:

Each domain task force will be tasked with developing review criteria for existing educational resources and gathering and analyzing data on those resources. Each task force will also assist in the creation of a database for an assessment tool for potential and active dog trainers and behavior counselors.

Job Description:
Task Force members work with the APDT staff who are responsible for planning, coordinating and implementing task force goals, objectives and strategies to accomplish its mission.

Responsibilities:

  • Complete tasks on a timely basis and productively participate; including attending all phone and internet meetings of the task force.
  • Develop criteria, with the APDT staff and consultants, for reviewing existing educational resources for the domain.
  • Using criteria developed by task force, research and analyze existing resources to develop a resource database.
  • Identify gaps relevant to the domain in existing educational resources.
  • Assist with developing questions for database for a pre-assessment online tool for trainers and behavior consultants, and potential trainers and behavior consultants.
