APDT Hires New Executive Director

Richard Spencer

Greenville, SC — After a national search, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers, Inc. has hired Richard E. Spencer to lead its association in its mission to promote better pet dog trainers through education.

Mr. Spencer’s background brings a high level of knowledge and experience to the APDT in both business and association management. Mr. Spencer gained his business experience during employment with the Eastman Kodak Company in finance, marketing, sales and general management positions.

Mr. Spencer also served as President of the Printing Industry of the Carolinas, based in Charlotte, NC, for the last 11 years. During that tenure, Mr. Spencer served in leadership positions with the Affiliate Executives of the Printing Industry of America. He holds an MBA in Marketing from Michigan State University, and participated in the Executive Development Program with Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Business. He’s also a member of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE).

“Mr. Spencer brings a vast amount of knowledge, experience, and leadership skills that will ensure that the APDT remains the premier pet dog trainer’s association,” says APDT President Teoti Anderson, CPDT. She adds, “We look forward to Mr. Spencer helping us grow and strategically plan for our future. We also look forward to him increasing awareness of our association among dog trainers, other canine professionals, product suppliers, the media, and pet dog owners.”

Mr. Spencer adds, “I feel that the APDT has positioned itself very well to enable the volunteer leadership and the staff to attain the goals and objectives of the organization. I am really excited about the opportunity presented to me.”

The APDT was founded in 1993 by Dr. Ian Dunbar, renowned veterinarian, author and pioneer of dog-friendly dog training. It is the largest association of dog trainers in the world, with its home office located in Greenville, SC. The APDT Annual Educational Conference and Trade Show is considered the premier event for industry professionals, with canine behavior experts from across the globe presenting the latest information in learning theory and training issues.
