Dr. Serpell is Professor of Humane Ethics and Animal Welfare at the School of Veterinary Medicine, University of Pennsylvania, where he also directs the Center for the Interaction of Animals and Society. He received his BS degree in zoology and his PhD on the behavior of Loriine parrots.
Currently, James Serpell is President of the International Society for Anthrozoology (ISAZ), and a former Council Member of the International Society for Applied Ethology. He also serves on the editorial boards of animal welfare, applied animal behavior, and human-animal interaction publications. In addition to publishing numerous articles on animal behavior and welfare, and human-animal relationships, Dr. Serpell is the author, editor, and co-editor of several books including In the Company of Animals, and Companion Animals & Us.
