Terry Ryan

Terry Ryan is the president of Legacy Canine Behavior & Training, Inc. Terry has been a professional trainer since 1968, specializing in reward-based exercises. In addition to instructing pet dog clases, Terry is a prolific writer, and a much sought-after presenter for national and international seminars and workshops. She has maintained membership and held various offices in local, national and international organizations including serving as a past president and board member of the National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors. She is a charter member of the Association of Pet Dog Trainers.

Terry began teaching in Japan in 1990 and helped create and still conducts the Japanese Canine Good Citizen testing and passport program that allows entry of qualified dogs into participating national hotels and restaurants.

She was one of the first members of the Delta Society, working on a variety of human-animal bond projects, and a past Delta Pet Partners Instructor and Animal Evaluator for many years. She participates in obedience, conformation and tracking and became an AKC obedience trial judge

Terry was a chairperson for the American Humane Association's Humane Dog Training Project. Her work with them resulted in a document of humane training standards published by the Delta Society and endorsed by the San Francisco SPCA, the Association of Pet Dog Trainers among others. Terry is on the advisory board to the Institute of Ethology at the North American Wildlife Foundation at Wolf Park and teaches a weeklong workshop there every summer.

In 1994, Terry asked Marian Breland-Bailey and Bob Bailey, who developed the original Chick Camp, to share their years of animal training experience with Legacy campers. Terry has included chickens in her current instructor’s courses “Coaching People to Train Their Dogs” and conducts two-day “Poultry in Motion” chicken training workshops.
