July 21, 2009 - When I registered for the 2008 APDT Annual Educational Conference and Trade Show in Louisville, Kentucky last year, not only was it my first time at an APDT conference, but I assumed it would be my last chance to attend for quite a while.
As a small business owner -- like most of us -- I am frugal when it comes to educational dollars. I usually opt for a couple of seminars and workshops within driving distance each year, rather than one big trip, and rely on the latest books and videos to supplement my learning. But excitement got the better of me last year when I realized the APDT conference was just a short drive away to Louisville, and I decided to take the plunge.
I’m so glad I did.
I absorbed more terrific training knowledge in those five days than I had in working with dogs and their owners the past five months. The excitement of hearing top trainers talk about the latest advances in animal training cannot be overstated, and the boost to my business and my career was tremendous.
Two days into the 2008 APDT conference, I decided to make attending the 2009 conference a priority. There may be an initial pinch to my bottom line, but the investment in education and professional skills cannot be devalued.
If this year you have the opportunity to attend your first conference, do it – you’ll be glad you did.
