Dog attendee policy

After much discussion and input from conference speakers, attendees and the Conference Committee, in 2005 the APDT Board of Directors established that dogs will not be allowed at our Annual Educational Conference and Trade Show. Service dogs of course, are an exception to this policy and are always welcome!

The number of complaints against dogs attending the conference has grown in recent years. Numerous speakers expressed their concern at the number of dogs under stress. Our conference evaluations were overwhelmingly against future dog attendance. Here are some of the complaints we received:

  • Some handlers could not control their dogs during the sessions and at the trade show.
  • The crowded session rooms compromised safety for some dogs.
  • Some dogs were blocking aisles and emergency exits. Some attendees were concerned about walking over dogs and offended that some owners allowed their dogs on seats, taking up space in rooms with popular speakers.
  • Some dogs barked continuously when left alone in hotel rooms and it was difficult to locate their owners.
  • There was an increase in owners who would not clean up after their dogs. Over the years, the APDT has had to pay additional cleaning fees to address this issue as we could not depend on all attendees to clean up responsibly. Volunteers have also stepped up to scoop. At a professional conference of dog trainers, this should not be necessary.

Finding hotels that will accept dogs, as well as accommodate our need for larger speaker rooms is becoming increasingly difficult. The hotels we will be using the next two years, while offering many benefits to attendees, do not have environments that are ideal for dogs.

As our conference continues to grow and attract national attention, we want to leave a favorable, professional impression with hotels. We sincerely appreciate and thank all the attendees who have taken such care to be responsible with their dogs in the past. It is unfortunate that a few attendees and their dogs have caused such significant problems.

The APDT Board will evaluate this policy on an annual basis and, should the situation change, we will certainly reconsider asking dogs to attend. For now, in protection of the APDT's reputation, in fiscal responsibility to avoid additional dog-related costs, and for the safety and comfort of our canine friends, dogs will not be allowed at the conference.
