Barbara Long gives private obedience lessons and facilitates behavior problem-solving at her business, Hand Dog Training. 

Barbara majored in Biology at SUNY Brockport and worked in environmental education and laboratory instrument sales.  In 1987, she changed careers and went to work for the Animal Protection Society (APS) of Orange County where she was the shelter manager for five years.  She began training her own dog during that time, and continues to volunteer as an instructor and coach the APS Dog Drill Team.  She was named a 2007 North Carolina Key Volunteer for her work at the Orange County Animal Shelter.

Barbara is a charter member of the APDT, the Carolina Trainers Forum and became the first North Carolina CPDT in 2001. She has attended all APDT conferences since 1994 and presented short programs in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

In 2004, Barbara was named the APDT’s Outstanding Trainer of the Year.  Currently, she is serving a second term on the APDT Board of Directors and is Vice-President.  She was the Elections Chair in 2005 and 2006 and is Board co-advisor to the Conference Committee.

Barbara has served on the Board of Directors of Chatham Animal Rescue and Education and volunteered on its Humane Education and Welfare Committees.  She was profiled in the book Careers with Animals by Willow Sirch. 

She trains her Gordon Setter, Niamh, in tracking and freestyle.
