Canine Behavior Surrounding Death
with Kathy Cooney
Dr. Kathleen Cooney is founder and owner of Home to Heaven, P.C., a mobile pet hospice and euthanasia service based in northern Colorado. Her compassionate team of six veterinarians provide services twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. She is a strong advocate for education and teaches in-home euthanasia techniques, along with client communication, to junior veterinary students in Colorado State University’s veterinary medical program and she is pleased to have been chosen for the AVMA’s euthanasia panel for 2010. In the spring of 2011, she competed writing her first ebook for veterinarians regarding the many facets of in-home euthanasia. Later that year, Dr. Cooney and 3 other authors completed work on a euthanasia textbook due for publication in the summer of 2012. In the winter of 2010, Dr. Cooney completed the first ever Pet Loss Companioning certification program offered in the United States. Later that year, she completed construction on the nation's first pet euthanasia center in Loveland, Colorado. The center is designed to offer a peaceful alternative to the busy vet's office and for those families who feel the memories of euthanasia in the home are too personal. In April 2011, she became the Education Chairperson for the International Association for Animal Hospice and Palliative Care (IAAHPC). Due to her dedication to the needs of aging and terminally ill animals, she has been awarded the 2011 Rising Star Veterinarian award by the Colorado Veterinary Medical Association.
