Professional Premium Members – This membership category corresponds to the current Professional level membership category. It is meant for the same types of individuals in the Professional membership category, but provides additional benefits, services and discounts for members who want to increase their service level from the association. These benefits include ability to become a C.L.A.S.S. Evaluator by taking the tests online without paying an additional fee; the ability to register one week earlier than other members for the annual conference; a higher rate of discounts for a variety of APDT programs, and additional features on the trainer search, as well as a highlighted trainer listing. $160/year
Professional Members – This membership category corresponds to the current Full Membership category. This category is designed for members who are full and part-time trainers and behavior consultants who work for income or as volunteers. These members teach group classes, do private consults, and may work in a shelter, veterinary or other training setting such as service dog, animal assisted intervention, working dog, and sports dog training, to name a few. $110/year
Supporting Members – This membership category corresponds to the current Associate Membership category. This membership category is for those who are interested in learning about training and behavior, but who are not trainers. Supporting members would include vendors, allied professionals, veterinary students, veterinary technicians, veterinarians, students and apprentices, groomers, daycare/boarding play group monitors, pet sitters, and shelter workers. $100/year
Supporting Members (Retirees) – For those members who are actively retired from the dog training profession and are 65 or older, the Supporting category is available at a 50% discount. This level is meant for members who are no longer seeing clients or teaching classes but who would like to stay informed about the profession and involved with the association. $50/year
In addition to the membership categories listed in the chart, we will also have the following membership categories.
Affiliate Members – In addition to the levels listed above, a special "affiliate" category is available for online course attendees who need to access the APDT Online Community for their coursework. Affiliate members can be upgraded to another membership level upon completion of the course. Otherwise affiliate membership is only active when the course is in session. These memberships can only be accessed by non-members taking an Online Certificate Course.
Subscribers – Non-members may continue to subscribe to The APDT Chronicle of the Dog for $50/year for a mailed copy and $25/year for digital subscriptions. In additional Professional Premium members may purchase additional subscriptions for a discounted rate.
Multi-Employee Business Membership Discounts
We will continue the multi-employee discounts for companies that have more than one individual who qualifies for membership. Each individual will be treated as an individual member regarding benefits, services, voting rights and their member account. Multi-employee memberships must be purchased by the company. Please note, the business itself will not be considered a member.
I already paid to be a C.L.A.S.S. Evaluator prior to the membership change. Will this be pro-rated in some way?
In consideration of the members who have participated in our C.L.A.S.S. program, we will provide additional months onto their first renewal membership based on the following schedule:
Are the same certifications required for Premium Professional membership as was for the previous Professional Membership level?
We will no longer require these certifications. However, in order to list these certifications on your trainer search record, you still will need to verify them with the APDT office first. Only these certifications will appear on your initial trainer search entry as well. A member's full trainer search entry can list all of the designations and degrees as you wish in detail.
In order to qualify as one of these listed certifications, the criteria is that the certification:
Currently these certifications are:
Why isn't my certification from my school or program able to be listed?
You will be able to list these in your individual trainer search pages. Only certifications that meet the accepted industry standards as a certification will be listed on the initial search listing. In order to qualify as one of these listed certifications, the criteria is that the certification:
Other designations meet the criteria for a certificate programs but not certifications.
Aren't you declining the standards for joining by not requiring certification?
The majority of our membership does not have a certification that meets the accepted industry standard definition. Until the dog training field widely pursues these certifications, separating out these members to a "second tier" status belies our stated mission of inclusiveness and encouraging education. Our ultimate goal is to provide the best education and services possible so that all members can move toward an independent certification.
If I have one of the independent certifications but I don't wish to become a Professional Premium member, can I still have my certification listed on the initial trainer search?
Yes, as long as your certification is verified by the APDT office, it will be listed.
Will I still have the same member number?
Yes, you will retain the same membership number. If your membership lapses, you may renew with that number up to a period of one calendar year, at which point you will receive a new number.
I am a Professional Member who was migrated to the Professional Premium membership. Can I move to lower service level with a refund for the extra funds?
You will not be able to move to lower service level until your next scheduled renewal date.
