How to Incorporate Bite Prevention into Dog Classes/Consults

Joan Orr M.Sc.

In this presentation we will discuss observation skills with respect to dog body language, proximity checks and reducing anxiety in both dogs and humans. We will talk about ways to incorporate teachable moments without a change in curriculum and how to include demonstrations that illustrate dog body language and emotion. These demonstrations include handling, resource guarding, puppy biting and how to Be a Tree. We will give some ideas for community service and how to promote your business while bringing bite prevention and body language information to the public.

Learning Objectives

  • To learn how to observe and point out to clients key dog body language signs and discuss their interpretation during dog class or private consults.
  • To learn how to incorporate exercises into dog class or behavior consults to help demonstrate dog body language and emotion to clients.
